Solar Water Heater

Relying on electric or fuel-fired boilers is not a cost effective solution in the long term. Solar water heating is the solution.

Hot water day and night, all year through.

At home or at work whenever you run a hotel or hospital, hot water is now a necessity. Going beyond a hot shower, hot water makes life so much simpler in the kitchen too. Even industries can use solar water heating for boiler feed water in their process heat applications.

Let the sun heat things up.

Solar water heaters are a blessing, because not only do they provide hot water, on demand, but practically no cost. A 100 litre solar water heating system can save more than 1 ton of CO2 emissions per year.

But what happens when sun is not shining?

Even during cloudy days the system is heating the water to some extent, but to ensure that the water temperature is adequate we can fit an optional heating element to the insulated storage tank, which ensures piping water all year around.

A solar water heater consists of a collector to collect solar energy and an insulated storage tank to store hot water. Based on the collector system, solar water heaters can be of two types.

Solar water heaters based on Flat plate Collectors

Here the solar radiation is absorbed by flat plate collectors which consist of an insulated outer metallic box covered on the top with glass sheet. Inside there are blackened metallic absorber (selectively coated) sheets with built in channels or riser tubes to carry water. The absorber absorbs the solar radiation and transfers the heat to the flowing water.

Solar water heaters based on Evacuated Tube Collectors

Here the collector is made of double layer borosilicate glass tubes evacuated for providing insulation. The outer wall of the inner tube is coated with selective absorbing material. This helps absorption of solar radiation and transfers the heat to the water which flows through the inner tube.

It makes an attractive and sustainable option with its pollution free nature and near zero operational cost. Solar water heaters run on a free fuel (i.e. sunshine), thus saving on energy costs that help recover its initial cost in just 2-4 years.
